Stadthorizont is the latest single from bass player / composer Benedikt Wieland. The composition is a part of the artist’s solo output: a series of sonic explorations into novel approaches to creating bass-centric music. The song was written during the first corona lockdown, when the composer found himself, to put it lightly, trapped in his Berlin apartment. He says, "The whole thing felt so strange, apocalyptic, almost: watching this big city grind to a complete halt. The silence was uncanny – this is why you can hear a person trying to light their cigarette in the background, because every sound coming from the outside was perfectly audible if I had a window open.” He continues, “It felt like a big grey wave was about to roll over the entire city, and that soon it was going to consume all of these lively streets, parks and cafes…” Once in while, Wieland would take a solitary drive through the city, just to break the spell of his “confinement.” On one of these drives he caught himself admiring the beauty of the city from afar, and thought "how fucked up this whole situation was". It’s thanks to this late night drive that this piece was named Stadthorizont (City Horizon), and turned into this gorgeous meditation on the beauty of an ailing metropolis.
